Tetralogy of Fallot: Key Features

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 333 views

Tetralogy of Fallot has four key features:

Ventricular septal defect
- an opening in the ventricular septum or dividing wall between the two lower chambers of the heart known as the right and left ventricles. This hole allows the oxygen-poor (blue) blood to mix with the oxygen-rich (red) blood.

Pulmonary stenosis
- abnormal narrowing of the opening into the pulmonary artery from the right ventricle. This narrowing blocks the blue blood from reaching the lung.

Right ventricular hypertrophy
- thickening of the anterior right ventricular wall and the septum while cavity size is usually normal or slightly enlarged. The muscular wall becomes thickened from overwork while the heart needs to pump harder against the resistance caused by the pulmonary stenosis.

Health Tip to Tighten Your Tummy

Thursday, November 20th, 2008 373 views

Here is a great tummy tightening exercise that is making the rounds in Hollywood. Lie on your back with your left hand behind your neck and your right arm straight out at your side. Keeping your right leg extended straight out in front of you bend the left knee so that the sole of your foot is flat on the floor. Use only your tummy muscles to lift your torso up about eight to ten inches off the floor as you raise your right leg and twist to bring the left elbow towards the right knee. Do this slowly and strongly. Then slowly lower leg and torso at the same time. Do not arch your back. It should stay pressed to the floor! Do ten in total and then switch sides for ten more. Rest a minute and repeat.

Generic Drugs: Basics of and Savings on Generic Drugs or Medicines

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 348 views

After blogging about the definition and importance of generic drugs or medicines, I’m posting a follow up to that article with this one which deals with the some basics of generic drugs and the possible money you’ll save by buying generic medicines instead of brand-name medicines.

Generics are copies of brand-name medicines whose patents have expired. That usually happens after a brand drug has been on the market for about 10 to 14 years. By law, the brand name company loses the right to be the only seller of that drug after its patent period is up. But it can be quite confusing when new generics become available.
